In this model, layers 1-4 are considered the lower layers, and mostly concern themselves with moving data around. Layers 5-7, called the the upper layers, contain application-level data. Every layer within an OSI model communicates with the other two layers which are below it and its peer layer in some another networked computing system. In the below-given diagram, you can see that the data link layer of the first system communicates with two layers, the network layer and the physical layer of the system. The seven layers of the OSI reference model are typically divided into two categories: upper layers (layers 4 through 7) and lower layers (layers 1 through 3).
